Current technologies, using "line of sight" systems to operate effectively, require excavation, construction and felling of trees and destruction of flora. For example, clearing a buffer zone of 100m (110 yards) wide for five airports, each with a 20 km perimeter, would require excavation and destruction of more than 10 sq. kilometers (2,470 acres – 3.861 sq. miles) or 10,000,000 sq. meters (11,900,000 sq. yards) of terrain.
